My work offers a challenge to anyone who thinks that they cannot draw or paint to have a go!
The rhythmic gestures and brush strokes are used in a very direct and seemingly uncontrolled way, representing thoughts and ideas about art, life and reality. Questioning value and judgements and reflecting on the influence of Abstract expressionism, outsider art & children‘s scribbles as a vehicle for visual communication. Where does knowing end and the unconscious start?
Resolution is sought within the painting or drawing itself, each gesture is layered against another, seeking to generate interesting and stimulating relationships on the surface or within the confines of space in painting & drawing. Each gesture is the result of rehearsed sequences of movement, seeking a moment of brilliance or inspiration to separate it from the mundane, the ordinary and make it exceptional and set it apart from the rest. A dance, a pose, an elegant gesture are pathways of balance and harmonies. Strategies of ugly and careless marks can sometimes unlock a painting or a drawing and provide an interesting and challenging avenue of visual enquiry.
For me the excitement is in raising the standard or level in abstraction; to use everyday common elements and make them extraordinary!
